I'm definitely intrigued by the story as well.Sonic Frontiers is an upcoming platform game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega. Going by the different impressions I'm reading online as well - definitely wouldn't surprise me if Sonic Frontiers ended up in the 80s category on Metacritic (which is already higher than pretty much every entry bar Sonic Mania). Especially since Sonic seems to have a fair few abilities to let you get around (bringing back the Parkour system from Lost World is very much welcome here). Think it will be quite fun finding these Cyperspace levels while exploring each of the Starfall Islands. I'm getting more "Mario 64 x BotW x Sonic Generations/Colours" sort of vibes with how they are treating Sonic Frontiers (instead of Mario 3D Land/World).and I'm OK with that. Or Special Stages if going by previous Sonic games.Įspecially since they are also confirmed to be "mostly" optional. Something akin to traditional 3D Sonic boost gameplay being used as BotW shrines (and just like in that game - some far more creative than others). Tbh I kind of suspected the Cyperspace content would be more bitesized in nature. If they do stick with this open zone concept in the future, I have no reason to believe it won't be a worse version of what we're going to get with Frontiers, given their track record. Sonic gameplay lost the physics from Adventure and Adventure 2 going into Heroes and Shadow (and 06 too), treasure hunt stages were a step down in Adventure 2, boost stages have gotten progressively more simplistic over the years, Wisp implementation got worse after Colours, Sonic Lost World parkour system somehow managed to get dethroned by the awful 2D sections in its own game, etc. Your last paragraph kind of emphasizes a huge problem I've had with 3D Sonic since its inception though: their first attempt at something is usually solid, and any further attempts at the formula in following games are almost always worse. Maybe some optional remixes like the DLC acts that game had. Obviously the open zone is supposed to be the meat of the game, but in that case, why not just focus on that, rather than shoving some boost gameplay levels in?Ĭlick to shrink.I like the boost levels, and I'd honestly be happy with a game that is just at least Unleashed quality boost levels and nothing else.

etc., so just things that have been added in because Sonic Team just don't know how to release a focused game without any padding via things that aren't just playing as Sonic and going through actual levels.

This open zone idea just seems like the not Sonic stages in the Adventure games, the Werehog and town stages in Unleashed, the extra acts in Sonic Colours, all the challenge gates in Generations, the hub worlds in 06, etc. Obviously there'll probably be some speedrun tech that'll fling Sonic at like Mach 4 through walls to skip puzzles, but, and again I hate to bring up BotW, with something like that, you had a lot of creative freedom in basically everything, and part of the fun was experimenting and coming up with a solution. Like there doesn't really seem to be anyway to solve them creatively- just do the thing it wants you to do. Just exploring a large open space for the sake of exploring a large open space doesn't really appeal to me in the slightest, what they've shown of the combat just seems to be going even harder into the 'enemies now take longer to kill' thing that they started with Heroes, and the puzzles just look very static from what they've shown so far. Click to shrink.Yeah, my problem is that the open zone stuff just has no appeal for me just yet.
